Gumroad's fee drops to 5% + $0.50 on new direct sales once a month passes $20,000 in sales. Gumroad adds sales tax for the buyer on top, and a PayPal sale on Gumroad pays PayPal's fee, which Gumroad does not list. Payhip's figures use the US online rate of your own Stripe or PayPal account; international cards cost more.

Gumroad states its card processing as 2.9% + $0.30 on top of its own fee. Payhip charges no processing itself: card payments run through the seller's own Stripe account, and the figure here is Stripe's published US online rate, with PayPal Checkout for PayPal sales.

Fees for the month, platform and card processing together, with Payhip on Stripe. At 100 sales ($2,500.00), Gumroad costs $402.50 and Payhip Plus $181.50. Gumroad has no monthly price, so it never charges anything in a month with no sales; Payhip's paid plans do.

When each Payhip plan pays for itself

Plus costs less than Free once a month's sales pass $966.67, and Pro costs less than Plus above $3,500. Going straight from Free to Pro pays off at $1,980.

Each line is the extra monthly price divided by the transaction-fee points it removes: $29 for 3 points, then $70 for 2 more. Stripe or PayPal charge the same on every plan, so processing does not move the line.

Gumroad's two rates, and Discover

Gumroad's fee is 10% + $0.50 until a calendar month's paid sales reach $20,000; every new direct sale after that is 5% + $0.50, and the count resets on the 1st. A refund that drops the month back under the line returns new sales to 10% + $0.50.

Sales that come through Gumroad Discover, its marketplace, pay a flat 30% with processing included. That is far more than a direct sale, and it buys something Payhip does not sell: buyers who found you on Gumroad. Switch the calculator to Discover to see what those sales keep you.

Not in the comparison: Gumroad adds sales tax for the buyer, a PayPal sale on Gumroad pays PayPal's fee (Gumroad does not list it), and international cards cost more through Stripe. Payout fees are left out on both sides.

Also worth comparing: Whop

If you sell memberships, communities or digital products and want payments, checkout and payouts in one place, compare Whop's fees too, or open a Whop store. For memberships billed through a creator page, see the Patreon fee calculator. Selling online courses rather than downloads? The Teachable vs Thinkific vs Kajabi calculator prices every plan of the three course platforms.

Gumroad and Payhip fees: common questions

01

What fees does Gumroad charge?

Gumroad charges 10% + $0.50 on each sale made through your own Gumroad link or store, plus card processing of 2.9% + $0.30 (or PayPal's fee on a PayPal sale), and adds sales tax for the buyer. Once your paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, new direct sales that month are 5% + $0.50. Sales made through Gumroad's Discover marketplace pay a flat 30%, which includes processing. There is no monthly fee.

02

What fees does Payhip charge?

Payhip has three plans: Free at $0 a month with a 5% transaction fee, Plus at $29 a month with 2%, and Pro at $99 a month with no transaction fee from Payhip. Stripe or PayPal still charge their own processing on every plan: 2.9% + $0.30 for a US card through Stripe, or 3.49% + $0.49 through PayPal Checkout.

03

Is Payhip cheaper than Gumroad?

On the same card sale, usually yes. A $25 sale costs $4.03 on Gumroad and $2.28 on Payhip's free plan with Stripe, because Payhip's 5% is half of Gumroad's 10% and it adds no per-sale fee of its own. The gap narrows above $20,000 a month, where Gumroad's rate halves, and Gumroad's Discover marketplace can bring buyers Payhip does not.

04

Does Gumroad charge a monthly fee?

No. Gumroad says there are no monthly payments or other hidden charges: it takes its fee per sale.

05

Do Payhip fees include Stripe or PayPal fees?

No. Payhip's 5%, 2% or 0% is its own fee; Payhip says PayPal and Stripe still charge their transaction fees, paid from your own Stripe or PayPal account.

06

What is Gumroad’s Discover fee?

Sales that come through Gumroad's Discover marketplace, rather than your own link, pay a flat 30% that includes all processing. It is the price of buyers Gumroad finds for you.

07

When does Payhip Plus or Pro pay for itself?

Plus costs less than Free once your monthly sales pass $966.67, and Pro costs less than Plus above $3,500. Processing is the same on every plan, so only the monthly price and the transaction fee decide it.
