The Short Answer
Pangea was the cheapest service we measured on this route, and by a distance: a 0.19% rate margin with no fee, which comes to about $1.90 on $1,000. Instarem follows at roughly $4.10, and Revolut at $4.49 if you stay inside your plan's monthly allowance.
At the far end, Xoom takes about 3.55% in the exchange rate — $40.50 on the same $1,000. That is twenty-one times what Pangea charges to move identical money to the identical account. Nepal is a crowded corridor, and crowded does not mean uniformly cheap.
The rate is fixed, so only the service matters
The Nepalese rupee is pegged to the Indian rupee, which makes this one of the most predictable rates anywhere. There is nothing to time and no good day to wait for. Every dollar of difference between one transfer and another comes from which app you opened — which is precisely why a twentyfold spread is worth two minutes of your attention.

All-in cost in US dollars on the USD/NPR corridor, August 2026. “None” in the margin column means the service uses the mid-market rate and charges only a fee.
In rupees, on $1,000 at a mid-market rate near 151.8, Pangea delivers roughly 151,500 NPR and Xoom about 145,650 NPR. That is a difference of nearly 5,900 rupees on a single ordinary transfer — and if you send monthly, roughly 70,000 rupees a year decided by nothing but which icon you tapped.
Sending from outside the US?

Two Ways to Overpay
1. Assuming the honest rate is the cheap one
Wise and Sendwave both give you the mid-market rate with nothing hidden in it, and on many corridors that makes them the obvious pick. Here it does not. Wise's fee on this route is around $20.25 on $1,000 — roughly ten times Pangea's entire cost, margin included. Sendwave fares much better at $5.00, but still nearly three times Pangea.
A transparent rate and a cheap transfer are different claims. On Nepal, several services with a small, visible margin beat the no-margin ones comfortably, because a fraction of a percent taken in the rate is simply less money than a double-digit fee.
2. Crossing Revolut's monthly allowance
Revolut looks like one of the best options in the table right up to the last column, where it jumps from $4.49 on $1,000 to $59.01 on $5,000. Its rate margin does not move; what changes is the fee. Every Revolut plan carries a monthly fair-usage allowance for international transfers, and beyond it Revolut adds roughly 1% of the excess.
If you send a few hundred dollars a month it is a genuinely good choice. For anything approaching a few thousand it becomes one of the worst on the list. The Revolut fee calculator prices it by plan so you can find your own line.
The Rupee Is Pegged to India
Nepal has fixed its currency to India's since 1993, at 1.60 Nepalese rupees to one Indian rupee, and Nepal Rastra Bank maintains that peg. India dominates Nepal's trade, so tying the two removes exchange-rate risk from most of what the country buys.
You can watch it hold in the market. In August 2026 the dollar bought about 151.8 Nepalese rupees and about 95.1 Indian rupees. Divide one by the other and you get 1.596 — within a third of a percent of the official peg, which is about as close as a real market ever sits to a stated number.
What it means for you: the rupee does not have good and bad days of its own. When USD/NPR moves it is because the dollar moved against the Indian rupee, not because anything happened in Kathmandu. So a standing monthly transfer carries no timing risk here — set it up and stop watching.
How the Money Lands
- Bank deposit. Nabil Bank, Nepal Investment Mega Bank, Global IME, NIC Asia, Himalayan Bank and Everest Bank are the names you will meet most. You need the account number and the bank, and for some services the branch as well — get it in writing rather than over the phone.
- Cash pickup. Nepal has an unusually dense payout network through domestic remittance operators, reaching well beyond the Kathmandu valley into hill and terai districts where bank branches thin out. For a family without an account this is often the only workable route, and coverage is genuinely good.
- Mobile wallets. eSewa and Khalti are widely used in Nepal, and some services pay into them directly. Handy for smaller, frequent support payments, though coverage varies by sender.
Mind the working week. Nepal's runs Sunday to Friday, not Monday to Friday, and Saturday is the weekly holiday. A transfer sent Friday afternoon US time can therefore sit through a Nepali Saturday before anything moves. If a date matters, send early in your week.
The 2026 US Remittance Tax
The 1% federal excise charge that began in 2026 applies to transfers paid for in cash or by money order, and to nothing else. Every service in the table above draws from a bank account or a card, so none of them attract it.
It is worth seeing the scale on this particular route. The cheapest transfer here costs 0.19%. A 1% charge would therefore cost five times the transfer itself — the levy dwarfing the service. Anyone still walking cash into a storefront for Nepal is paying twice over. Rules like this get revised, so check the current position before a large sum.
How to Pay the Least
- Check, because the spread is twentyfold. On most corridors the gap between best and worst is a few tens of percent. Here it is 21×. No other decision you make on this page comes close.
- Do not equate a clean rate with a cheap transfer. Wise charges no margin and still lands near the expensive end, because the fee does the work instead.
- Automate it. The peg means there is no timing risk, so a standing monthly transfer costs you nothing in lost rate and saves you the decision every month.
- Watch Revolut's allowance if you send large amounts. Excellent under it, among the worst above it.
- Send midweek. Nepal's Sunday-to-Friday week means a late-Friday send from the US is the slowest one you can make.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest way to send money from the USA to Nepal?
Pangea, on the figures we measured in August 2026: a 0.19% rate margin and no fee, which is about $1.90 on a $1,000 transfer. Instarem follows at roughly $4.10 and Revolut at $4.49 for smaller amounts. At the other end Xoom takes about 3.55% in the rate, or $40.50 on the same $1,000 — over twenty times Pangea's cost for identical money.
Why is the Nepalese Rupee exchange rate so predictable?
Because it is not really floating. Nepal has pegged the rupee to the Indian rupee since 1993 at a fixed 1.60 NPR per INR, and Nepal Rastra Bank maintains it. Checking in August 2026, the market rate divided out at 1.596 — within a third of a percent of the official peg. The practical effect is that USD/NPR is a USD/INR story, so there is no point waiting for a good day on the rupee itself.
Is Wise the cheapest way to send money to Nepal?
No. Wise gives the mid-market rate with no margin, but its fee on this corridor is large — about $20.25 on $1,000, roughly ten times Pangea's total cost. Wise is excellent on major currencies; on Nepal it sits near the expensive end. The rate being honest and the transfer being cheap are separate questions.
How long does a transfer from the US to Nepal take?
App transfers funded from a bank account or debit card commonly reach a Nepalese bank account within a day, and some arrive in minutes. Deposits slow across weekends and Nepali public holidays, and Nepal's working week runs Sunday to Friday rather than Monday to Friday, so a Friday afternoon send from the US can sit longer than you expect.
Is there a US tax on sending money to Nepal in 2026?
Only on transfers paid for with cash or a money order, which is what the 1% federal excise charge introduced in 2026 targets. Every service in this guide pulls from a bank account or card instead, so none of them trigger it. On a corridor where the cheapest option costs 0.19%, incidentally, a 1% charge would cost five times the transfer itself.
Key Takeaways
- Pangea at 0.19% was the cheapest we measured — $1.90 on $1,000 against Xoom's $40.50, a 21× spread.
- Wise is not the cheap option here. Its rate is honest but the fee is around $20.25, near the expensive end of the table.
- The rupee is pegged to India's at 1.60 and held at 1.596 when we checked, so there is no timing to be done — automate and forget it.
- Revolut jumps from $4.49 to $59.01 between $1,000 and $5,000 when you cross its monthly allowance.
- Nepal works Sunday to Friday, so a Friday-evening US transfer waits longest.
