Sending Money to Uganda from the US: What It Really Costs

For a lot of Ugandan families, money from abroad arrives on a phone, not in a bank. That makes the route quick and convenient. It also makes it one of the easiest places to overpay, because the gap between a good quote and a bad one on this corridor is unusually wide.

The Short Answer

Pay from your US bank account through a money transfer app, and decide up front whether the money should land in a bank account or on MTN or Airtel mobile money. On a $500 transfer, the cheapest standing price in our current data is Paysend at about $6.14 all-in, then Taptap Send at about $10.72 and Remitly at about $10.93.

Here is why it is worth two minutes of comparison: on a $1,000 transfer, the most expensive standing price in our latest quotes is about 16 times the least expensive one, for the same dollars going to the same country.

The tax nobody mentions at checkout

Receiving mobile money is free, but when your recipient withdraws it as cash, Uganda takes a 0.5% excise duty on the amount withdrawn, on top of the agent's own fee. It is not part of any quote you see in the US, so factor it in if the money will be cashed out in full.

Estimates only, not live quotes. "Recipient Gets" is for a bank deposit funded from a bank account, on today's mid-market rate: for a "provider quote", minus the rate markup and fee from that provider's own recent quote; for an estimate, minus the provider's typical markup and fee. Rows are ranked by total cost, the fee plus the rate markup, so a fee charged on top of the amount sent counts against a provider even when its recipient gets more. Real cost varies by corridor, amount, delivery and payment method, and promotions (e.g. new-customer offers can be cheaper). Tap a provider to get its live rate before sending. The dot by each provider shows confidence, and the label says how the figure was grounded: "corridor estimate" is a rate we measured for this exact pair; a currency-code estimate (e.g. "USD estimate") is measured for that source currency but not this destination; "typical estimate" is the provider's general figure across all its corridors; "provider quote" is that provider's own recent quote for this pair, its markup and fee applied to today's mid-market rate exactly as its calculator shows them, and a provider whose quote depends on a payment or delivery choice is left out here and priced on its own calculator. Margins are verified against live provider quotes and the World Bank Remittance Prices database; the date above is the most recent collection. Some โ€œSend money nowโ€ buttons are partner links: we may earn a commission if you sign up, at no cost to you, and rows are ranked by cost whatever the link. See how we collect these prices and our advertising disclosure.

From our current data, collected October 26, 2026, for a transfer from the US paid from a bank account and delivered to a bank account. Wiseโ€™s prices from the US are for paying it from a connected US bank account (ACH). Wise also takes payment by wire transfer, at a different fee. A dash means the provider has no quote at that amount whose fee and rate we can state. โ‰ˆ marks a price between two amounts the provider quoted, where its fee and rate are known to hold. How we collect these prices.

Instarem, Wise, Sendwave and Western Union charge a different rate margin at different amounts, so their costs can fall as the amount rises rather than climbing steadily.

  • BOSS Money, Pangea and WorldRemit donโ€™t price a transfer paid from a bank account and delivered to a bank account on this route, only other ways to pay or receive.
  • We hold no current quote for this route from OFX, Revolut and XE.

All-in cost in US dollars, paid from a US bank account and deposited to a Ugandan bank account. Green marks the lowest standing price at each amount. A promotional price, or a quote that beats our mid-market reference, is shown but not marked.

Read down the $1,000 column and the pattern is hard to miss. From the cheapest standing price to the dearest, the difference is about 16 percentage points of the amount you send. Sendwave, Xoom, Ria Money Transfer, MoneyGram and Western Union take 3% or more in the rate alone, and MoneyGram and Western Union add a sizable fee on top. On a corridor this lopsided, sticking with whichever app you already have can cost far more than the fee suggests.

You will also see Instarem and Wise marked โ€œrate ref differsโ€. At one or more amounts, their quoted rate gave more shillings than our own mid-market reference. That usually means the reference and the quote were taken at slightly different moments in a fast-moving market, so we show those prices but don't rank them.

Mobile Money: Free to Receive, Taxed to Cash Out

Mobile money is how much of Uganda pays rent, school fees and market stalls. The two networks that matter are MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money, and an international transfer lands in either one against the recipient's phone number, usually within minutes. Bank of Uganda figures for 2025 put about 61% of the money sent home on mobile money, with the US the largest single source, at about 28% of the total.

For delivery to a mobile wallet on a $1,000 transfer, the cheapest standing price in our current data is Ria Money Transfer at $10.30 all-in, then MoneyGram at $16.57 and Remitly at $18.92. In other words, the cheapest mobile money payout costs about the same as the cheapest bank deposit on the same $1,000.

What the recipient pays on their side

  • Receiving: free. The full amount you sent, converted at the rate you were quoted, lands in the wallet.
  • Cashing out: the agent's withdrawal fee, which the network sets in bands by amount, plus Uganda's 0.5% excise duty on the value withdrawn. Cashing out the whole of a $1,000 transfer means about 22,000 shillings in tax alone.
  • Spending from the wallet: paying a merchant, a utility or a school directly from the balance avoids the withdrawal fee and the tax on that part.
Wallets have limits

MTN accepts up to 5 million shillings per transfer from abroad and 20 million a day, roughly $1,120 and $4,490 at today's rate, and a wallet on a basic tier can take much less in one go. Ask your recipient whether their wallet can receive the amount, and confirm the exact number and the name registered on it. A transfer to a mistyped number is far harder to recover than a failed bank deposit.

05

The Shilling Has Been Sliding

The Ugandan shilling floats, with the Bank of Uganda stepping in only to smooth disorderly moves; it says plainly that it does not defend a particular rate. In October the shilling fell hard against the dollar and touched about its weakest level in more than thirty years. The central bank points to a wider current account deficit: lower coffee prices and tourism receipts, dearer oil and freight, and investors pulling back from riskier markets. On October 14 it raised its policy rate by 2.25 percentage points, to 12%, at an unscheduled meeting. On October 27, 2026 the mid-market rate stood at 4,454 shillings to the dollar.

A weaker shilling means each dollar buys more at home, which helps the family receiving it. It also means quotes go stale quickly. A price you saw last week is not the price you will get today, so compare on the day you send.

Fast markets are also when a service's rate margin is easiest to miss. With thousands of shillings to the dollar, a margin of a few percent hides in the digits. On a $1,000 transfer, every 1% taken in the rate is about 45,000 shillings that never arrive. The only number that settles it is the amount in shillings at the end of each provider's checkout.

06

When a Bank Account or a Counter Is Better

Mobile money is not always the right answer. For larger sums, such as school fees, building materials or a land payment, a bank deposit is often the better fit: the balance is not capped the way a wallet is, there is no 0.5% duty to move it, and it leaves a clean record. Stanbic, Centenary Bank, Absa and dfcu are among the banks your recipient is most likely to use. A deposit usually arrives within one to three business days.

Cash pickup makes sense for someone with neither a wallet nor an account, or who needs physical cash the same day. The recipient brings the reference number and a national ID. For cash pickup on a $1,000 transfer, the cheapest standing price in our current data is MoneyGram at $13.57 all-in, then Remitly at $18.92 and Ria Money Transfer at $58.40.

The one option to leave out entirely is a wire from your US bank. US banks charge up to $75 to send a $1,000 wire (their published fees, checked October 2026) and a correspondent bank typically takes about $20, before an exchange-rate markup the banks donโ€™t publish and that we could not check on this route. That is before your family's bank in Uganda takes its own charge for receiving it.

07

The 1% US Tax, and How to Stay Clear of It

Since January 1, 2026, the US has charged a 1% excise tax on remittances paid for with cash, a money order or a cashier's check. The sending company collects it at the counter. Fund the transfer from a US bank account or with a US debit or credit card, as every app in the table does, and it simply doesn't apply. (Tax rules change, so check your own situation before a large transfer.)

Questions People Ask

What is the cheapest way to send money from the US to Uganda?

Use a money transfer app and pay from your US bank account. On a $500 transfer, the cheapest standing price in our current data is Paysend at about $6.14 all-in, then Taptap Send at about $10.72 and Remitly at about $10.93. For delivery to a mobile wallet on a $1,000 transfer, the cheapest standing price in our current data is Ria Money Transfer at $10.30 all-in, then MoneyGram at $16.57 and Remitly at $18.92. A bank wire is the expensive way: up to $75 in fees, plus a rate markup banks donโ€™t publish.

Can I send straight to MTN Mobile Money or Airtel Money?

Yes. Several services pay directly into an MTN Mobile Money or Airtel Money account, identified by the recipient's phone number, and the money usually shows up within minutes. The services with a mobile money price in our latest quotes are Ria Money Transfer, MoneyGram, Remitly, Sendwave, WorldRemit, Western Union and Xoom. The name you enter should match the name registered on the line.

Who pays the mobile money withdrawal tax?

The person cashing out. Uganda charges excise duty of 0.5% on the value of mobile money withdrawals, on top of the agent's withdrawal fee. Receiving the money and keeping it in the wallet costs nothing extra, so a recipient who pays bills or buys airtime straight from the wallet avoids the tax on that part.

Why does the exchange rate for Uganda keep changing?

The shilling floats, and in October 2026 it weakened sharply, touching about its lowest level against the dollar in more than three decades. On October 27, 2026 the mid-market rate stood at 4,454 shillings to the dollar. When a currency moves that fast, compare the shillings each service will deliver on the day you send rather than relying on last month's numbers.

How long does a transfer to Uganda take?

Mobile money and cash pickup are usually ready within minutes of the transfer being approved. A deposit to a Ugandan bank account tends to take one to three business days, longer over a weekend or a public holiday.

Is there a US tax on sending money to Uganda?

Only if you pay for the transfer in cash, by money order or by cashier's check. Since January 1, 2026 those transfers carry a 1% federal excise tax. Pay from a US bank account or with a US debit or credit card and no tax applies.

The Bottom Line

On this route, the provider you choose matters more than almost anything else. Compare the shillings delivered on the day, choose mobile money for everyday support and a bank account for big payments, and remind your family that cashing out the whole balance carries a 0.5% tax.
