Same-currency wires (e.g. USD to a USD account abroad) skip the exchange-rate markup, but the wire fee and intermediary fees still apply.
What the wire costs
Wire fees are each bank’s published fee for a standard personal account, online where the bank offers it (Bank of America’s checked October 2026); a banker-assisted wire can cost more. The intermediary fee is our estimate of a typical correspondent deduction ($20.00): banks don’t publish it and it varies with the route. Check live quotes before sending.
Bank of America wire transfer fees in full
| Transfer type | Online | In branch / assisted |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic outgoing | $30 | $30 |
| International outgoing (US dollars) | $45 | $45 |
| International outgoing (foreign currency) | Free* | Free* |
| Incoming (domestic or international) | $15 | $15 |
*Bank of America charges no wire fee to send in foreign currency, but its exchange rate carries a markup it doesn’t publish. BofA Rewards members at the Preferred Plus, Preferred Honors and Premier tiers have the incoming domestic wire fee waived, and Premier members the outgoing domestic wire fee too. The foreign-currency angle
Like several big banks, Bank of America charges nothing to send an international wire in the recipient’s local currency, versus $45 to send US dollars. But “no fee” does not mean free: BofA converts your dollars at its own exchange rate, with a markup over the mid-market rate, and that markup is where the real cost sits. Bank of America doesn’t publish that markup, and we have not been able to measure it. Where we could measure one (Chase and Wells Fargo, on October 7, 2026), it ran 2.9% to 4%: $146 to $202 on $5,000.
BofA Rewards waivers
Bank of America’s relationship program, BofA Rewards, waives some wire fees at its higher tiers: the incoming domestic wire fee at Preferred Plus, Preferred Honors and Premier, and the outgoing domestic wire fee at Premier. Its terms name no waiver for an international wire, so the $45 US-dollar fee, and the exchange-rate markup on a foreign-currency wire, still apply.
Wire limits and timing
Bank of America sets daily wire limits that vary by account and history, with higher amounts available in a financial center. A domestic wire sent before the early-afternoon cutoff usually arrives the same business day, while an international wire takes one to five. Because both the limit and the fee waiver depend on your account tier, it is worth checking your specific terms before a large transfer.
A $5,000 wire, side by side
The trade-off is easiest to see with a figure. Bank of America charges $45 to wire $5,000 in US dollars, or no fee to send it in the recipient’s currency, but that “free” option converts at a markup the bank doesn’t publish. Where we could measure one (Chase and Wells Fargo, on October 7, 2026), it ran 2.9% to 4%: $146 to $202 on $5,000. No BofA Rewards tier waives the international fee or the markup, so a fee-free wire can still quietly cost more than a specialist that uses the mid-market rate. Before sending, check the converted amount the recipient will actually receive against a transparent provider; on larger transfers the rate, not the fee, decides who is cheaper.
How to pay less than a Bank of America wire
The fee is only half the cost of an international wire. Bank of America also converts your dollars at its own exchange rate, with a markup over the real mid-market rate that it doesn’t publish and that we have not been able to measure. Where we could measure one (Chase and Wells Fargo, on October 7, 2026), it ran 2.9% to 4%: $146 to $202 on $5,000. A correspondent bank typically takes about $20 in transit as well.
For international transfers, a specialist like Wise or OFX prices the conversion differently from a bank. Wise converts at the mid-market rate and charges a stated fee, while OFX builds its margin into the exchange rate. Domestically, Zelle, ACH and real-time payments are free unless you need same-day guaranteed settlement. Size up the true cost with the wire transfer fee calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Bank of America wire transfer cost?
A domestic outgoing wire is $30. An international outgoing wire is $45 when you send US dollars, or no Bank of America fee at all if you send in foreign currency (though the exchange-rate markup applies). Incoming wires are $15. BofA Rewards waives the incoming domestic wire fee from the Preferred Plus tier, and the outgoing domestic wire fee at Premier.
Does Bank of America charge for incoming wires?
Yes: $15 for an incoming wire, whether it comes from inside the US or abroad. BofA Rewards members at the Preferred Plus, Preferred Honors and Premier tiers have the incoming domestic wire fee waived.
Is a Bank of America foreign-currency wire really free?
There is no Bank of America fee to send in foreign currency, but it is not free: the bank converts your dollars at its own rate, with a markup over the mid-market rate. Bank of America doesn’t publish that markup, and we have not been able to measure it. Where we could measure one (Chase and Wells Fargo, on October 7, 2026), it ran 2.9% to 4%: $146 to $202 on $5,000. On a larger transfer a markup of that size exceeds the $45 US-dollar fee, so weigh the all-in cost, not just the fee.
How do I avoid Bank of America wire fees?
For international transfers, price a specialist against the wire: Wise converts at the mid-market rate and shows its fee, while OFX builds its margin into the rate. Domestically, Zelle and ACH are free unless you need same-day funds. If you keep large balances at BofA, the Premier tier of BofA Rewards waives the outgoing domestic wire fee, but not the international fee or the FX markup.
How long does a Bank of America wire take?
A domestic wire generally settles the same business day if sent before the cutoff; an international wire usually takes one to five business days, depending on the destination country and correspondent banks. The fee mainly pays for that speed and certainty.
